He implies how Mechanical Engineering is key to all steps of manufacturing or designing right from planning a system. Whether it be the automobile industry, medical sector or manufacturing factories, mechanical engineers are an integral part of the process.
In structural analysis and design of components relevant to any industry, mechanical engineers play an important role. Right from planning how a component will function to designing it in the given constraints, the tasks that come to mechanical engineers are many. Whether it be keeping in mind the fluid flow to design airplanes or the blood stream flow to design biomedical instruments, or thermal applications in a braking system, mechanical engineering expertise goes a long way in deciding the structure of all components involved. Mechanical engineers also contribute to disruptive and emerging technologies like robotics, automation, cyber physical systems, Internet of Things, virtual reality, blockchain, drones etc.

Adding to the same, Mr Ayyappadas A. M explains on the role of women in engineering. With examples like Kalpana Chawla clearly indicating how women are already a powerful part of engineering at its peak stages, he emphasises on the role of women in engineering. No engineering job cannot be done by women, he adds. So much so that, industries are continuously on the lookout for women employees and leaders. All sectors are looking to diversify their teams by building teams with equal gender ratio, breaking all existing gender stereotypes. Any role not being suitable to women is just a misconception which should be banished. Amrita University puts in best efforts to cut across and abolish any gender bias.
With the Indian economy driven by solid fundamentals, how can long-term possibilities of mechanical engineering be estimated in India? Answering this question, Mr Ayyappadas says that economy is sure to recover and the opportunities are definitely going to bounce back. The three components of an economy include, who will produce goods, who will supply these and who will consume it? In this process of what to produce and how to do it, mechanical engineers are key and their future possibilities are sure to go up.
